The problem. The owners of this home very rarely used their large jetted tub, and the shower was teeny tiny for the 6’4” tall owner of this home. There was also no linen closet for additional storage in this master bath. Not to mention many of the finishes felt dated. The home owners were definitely ready for a brand new look!

The solution?
My solution was to seal the former window opening above the tub with a glass block window so a large walk-in shower could be created where the bath tub was previously located. Where the shower used to be, we created built-in cabinetry with bun feet to match the custom vanity so these units would look more like pieces of furniture versus standard pre-fab cabinets.
The Recipe Used to Create this Fabulous Bathroom?
Travertine Tile: Travertine is a beautiful natural stone. As you can see a 12″ tile was used on the floors and shower walls with sheets of 2″ travertine applied to the shower pan basin. Note the horizontal installation on shower walls below the band of glass mosaic tile and the diagonal variation above. While travertine is a popular option for flooring, homeowners should be made aware of some of the drawbacks of travertine before installing. It’s a natural stone with a mid-level rating in hardness and is pourous. These holes are often filled with epoxy prior to being sold to the consumer. Make sure the tint of fill used is suitable for the look you are trying to achieve – be weary of yellow or pinkish hues. Travertine tile needs to be sealed and will still be susceptible to some stains.
Frameless Shower Enclosure: Frameless enclosures are beautiful to look at and really open up small spaces, making this room feel larger. Plus we don’t have to worry about the color of the frame becoming “dated” down the road!
Glass Mosaic: The home owner wanted to create an entire wall of glass mosaic on the left wall above and around the built-in vanity. Because of budget we just used mosaic in the band previously noted but also in the shampoo nook. Check out the detail shots below!

Sapphire Blue Granite: Also known as Sapphire Brown, English Brown, or Brown Sapphire, this beautiful granite was installed in several places throughout this bathroom including the vanity top, quarter round corner seat in shower, window sill, and shelf in shampoo nook (see photo below).

Chrome: In my line of business of staging homes for resale, brass is OUT! This includes all plumbing and electrical fixtures as well as standard hardware. Several years ago brushed nickel was very trendy until taken over by the popular “oil rubbed bronze” finish. Fixture finish selections will also depend on the style of a home, but I chose a timeless chrome finish for this bathroom.
Semi-Custom Cabinets: As I mentioned earlier, these cabinets look more like furniture than standard pre-fab cabinets. The doors were ordered pre-made while our carpenters customized the size and scale of these cabinets and added the awesome bun feet!

Sea Salt: The last ingredient in my recipe is Seat Salt which was applied to the walls. And by Sea Salt, I mean SW6204 by Sherwin Williams. It is my new favorite color for creating that “Spa” like atmosphere for home owners.
