IKEA Office Niche featuring Expedit in White
With all the repeats on television this summer, HGTV Design Star has been my new favorite show to watch with all new episodes. Immediately following the season finale in July the network created a new “All Star” version, bringing back some of their favorite design personalities from past seasons. Last night’s challenge was to redesign the set from the popular 1980’s sitcom, “The Facts of Life”. One team repurposed the alcove next to the front door as a computer niche, and the judges loved the way the designers used this space that would have otherwise been a “dead zone”.
There are often areas in homes that present unique design challenges to homeowners, and every square foot in your home should serve a purpose. I wanted to re-share this child’s bedroom that I worked on which had low walls and sloping ceilings, a perfect example of a design challenge for homeowners. This room had several pieces of furniture that I wanted to make work in this space but none of them would fit in one particular peninsula or corner of the room. Since there was no other area in the home for the child to do homework other than the kitchen table, I made good use of the corner with low walls by creating a study niche with furnishings from IKEA. Don’t you just love the Expedit (cubed shelving) line?
